The Catholic community across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains is mourning the passing of Greg Whitby AM, former Executive Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Parramatta. Greg passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by his beloved wife Sue and close family members after a brief period of hospitalisation.
Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv. paid tribute to Greg in a heartfelt statement, acknowledging his profound influence on generations of students, teachers, and leaders in Catholic education. “It is with profound sadness that I share with you the news of the passing of Greg Whitby,” Bishop Vincent said. “He left a strong legacy that others can build on. His absolute commitment to Catholic education as a vehicle of transformation for young people in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains will live on.”
Greg Whitby dedicated more than four decades of service to Catholic education, establishing himself as a passionate advocate for innovative and inclusive schooling. His career saw him serve as Executive Director of Catholic Education in both the Parramatta and Wollongong Dioceses, where he championed a model of learning that placed students at the heart of every decision. Colleagues recall his bold leadership style, his forward-thinking vision, and his deep compassion for teachers and students alike.
Under his leadership in Parramatta, Greg guided over 80 Catholic schools serving tens of thousands of students. He was instrumental in driving modern approaches to teaching and learning, particularly in how technology could enhance education and better prepare students for a changing world. His belief in education as a tool for equity, opportunity, and transformation shaped the identity of Catholic schooling in the region and inspired countless educators to embrace innovation while remaining grounded in faith.
Greg’s contributions were formally recognised when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to education, particularly in the Catholic sector, and to professional associations. Beyond titles and accolades, however, those who knew him best remember his warmth, humility, and relentless dedication to improving opportunities for young people.
In addition to his professional achievements, Greg was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Family was central to his life, and his ability to balance professional leadership with personal love and care is one of the qualities most admired by those closest to him. His wife Sue and their loved ones were by his side in his final moments, a testament to the strength of his family bonds.
As the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta reflects on his passing, many are expressing gratitude for Greg’s vision and tireless work. His influence will continue through the schools he nurtured, the educators he mentored, and the thousands of students whose lives were shaped by his commitment to faith-based education.
Funeral details and memorial arrangements will be shared by the Diocese in the coming days. The community is encouraged to keep Greg’s family in their prayers as they grieve the loss of a remarkable man who gave so much to Catholic education and to the mission of the Church.
Vale Greg Whitby AM. His legacy of faith, service, and transformation will endure for years to come.
