FORT MORGAN, Colo. — One person was killed and three others injured Sunday when two small planes collided while attempting to land at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, each carrying two people, struck each other mid-air while approaching the airport. The Cessna, which was on final approach, was hit by the second plane, crashed, and caught fire.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said they received reports of the crash around 10:44 a.m. Local deputies, Fort Morgan Police, Colorado State Patrol, Fort Morgan Fire Department, and Morgan County Ambulance responded to the scene.
Two occupants of the Cessna sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One occupant of the second plane was hospitalized. Tragically, the fourth person was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morgan County Coroner’s Office.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the collision. The identities of those involved have not yet been released.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event. We also thank all the agencies and citizens who assisted in responding to the crash and helping extinguish the fire until first responders arrived.”
