Cameron Smoot Obituary, Death;- The Fayette County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the individual who passed away following a fall while hiking at Whittleton Arch in the Red River Gorge.

As stated in the release, 24-year-old Cameron Smoot from Mason, Ohio, was declared dead on Saturday at UK Hospital after sustaining severe injuries from the fall.

According to Powell County Search and Rescue, the incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday, when Smoot fell an estimated 40 feet from the summit of Whittleton Arch onto the rocks below. Emergency personnel from Powell County EMS, Lee County Search & Rescue, Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, and Kentucky State Parks were dispatched to provide assistance.

Rescue teams reported that Smoot was conscious when first found but in critical condition. He was evacuated from the Gorge, taken to Middlefork Fire Department, and subsequently airlifted to UK Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is actively continuing its investigation.
