Dagoberto Rodriguez Obituary, Death; A 60-year-old man was shot and killed on Sunday afternoon following a dispute regarding a parked vehicle near a homeless shelter in Dallas. Authorities have apprehended a 66-year-old man in relation to the incident.
Dallas police reported that officers were summoned to the 1800 block of Jeffries Street at 5:10 p.m. in response to a shooting. As stated in an arrest affidavit, the incident occurred on a sidewalk adjacent to the Austin Street Center homeless shelter.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Dagoberto Rodriguez, aged 60, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was transported to Baylor University Medical Center, where he was declared deceased at 6:32 p.m.
The suspect, identified as Charles Reeder, 66, was arrested at the scene after he flagged down the responding officers and admitted to being the shooter. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of minor cuts and bruises to his face before being transferred to Dallas County Jail, where he faces a murder charge.
The affidavit indicates that Reeder contacted 911 following the shooting, stating that he had shot Rodriguez.
Two witnesses informed the police that Rodriguez, who was homeless and residing in the vicinity, was sleeping on the sidewalk next to a white Lexus owned by Reeder. Upon Reeder’s return to his vehicle, he confronted Rodriguez for being in close proximity to it.
Witnesses reported that Rodriguez moved approximately 10 feet away, yet Reeder confronted him once more. A physical altercation ensued, during which witnesses claimed Reeder struck Rodriguez multiple times. Reeder then drew a handgun and shot Rodriguez once, as detailed in the affidavit.
One witness relayed to the police that Rodriguez was unarmed and that there was no justification for the shooting.
In a police interview, Reeder stated that he had been attempting to gain entry into the Austin Street Center shelter and had been sleeping in his car nearby. He expressed that he became suspicious of Rodriguez and confronted him. Reeder alleged that Rodriguez struck him in the face several times, resulting in a brief loss of consciousness.
According to the affidavit, Reeder said that after he regained consciousness, he went to his car, retrieved a handgun from the glove box, and concealed it in his pants. He admitted to police that he was angry and did not get the gun for self-protection but for “confidence” to confront Rodriguez again.
Reeder told police he could have walked away and called 911 but was angry after being “insulted.” He admitted to swinging at Rodriguez before shooting him.
Police found a single .45-caliber shell casing at the scene and a .45-caliber handgun in Reeder’s vehicle after obtaining a search warrant. The gun had been reported stolen in 2024, according to the affidavit.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Adam Joslin at 214-649-2790
