Jamari Henry Obituary, Death; – Five young men were shot, one of them fatally, during a chaotic shooting incident in the Bronx that concluded with the assailants crashing their getaway vehicle a few blocks away, according to police reports.
This outbreak of violence occurs merely five days after Mayor Adams pledged to deploy over 1,000 police officers to the Bronx in an effort to mitigate the rising tide of violent crime in the area.
The victims were gathered outside a smoke shop located on Allerton Ave. near White Plains Road in Allerton when a gray Honda approached around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, as reported by witnesses to the police.
At least four individuals exited the Honda and opened fire on the group, striking most of them in the legs and arms. Jamari Henry, aged 25, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and body.
The assailants returned to the Honda and fled the scene, only to crash the vehicle half a mile away at the intersection of Arnow and Hone Aves., as stated by officials.
Emergency medical personnel transported all five victims to Jacobi Medical Center, where Henry succumbed to his injuries. He resided in the Wakefield area of the Bronx, according to law enforcement.
A 27-year-old man was shot in the foot, a 25-year-old man was hit in the arm, another 21-year-old man also suffered an arm injury, and a second 27-year-old man received a graze wound to the leg; all are anticipated to recover.
Officers responding to the scene apprehended the four suspects involved in the crash. One of the suspects sustained injuries during the collision and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
Authorities reported that several firearms were discovered in the vehicle. Charges against the suspects were still pending as of Tuesday. On Thursday, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the NYPD would assign an additional 1,000 officers to combat crime in the beleaguered borough.
He made this declaration on a basketball court at Haffen Park in Baychester, where a gang-related mass shooting during a basketball tournament on August 23 resulted in one fatality and four injuries, including a teenage girl in critical condition with a bullet lodged behind her eye.
Just one day prior to the tournament shooting, four teenagers aged between 13 and 15 were injured when gunfire erupted around 4 p.m. on Tratman Ave. near St. Peters Ave., just down the street from The Pearly Gates playground in Westchester Square, according to police reports.
