Margarette Cooper Obituary, Death; – The Charleston County Coroner has confirmed the identity of the elderly woman who passed away following an incident involving another resident at a Mount Pleasant assisted living facility.
Margarette Cooper, aged 84, succumbed at MUSC on August 24, the day after a reported assault at The Artisan, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin.
Both the cause and manner of death remain under investigation, Martin stated. The completion of the final report is anticipated to take between 10 to 12 weeks. Mount Pleasant Police were dispatched to the facility around 7 p.m. on August 23 in response to an assault call.
According to the report, police discovered a resident from the facility’s memory care unit lying unconscious on the floor. Authorities learned that the victim was walking alongside another woman when the latter allegedly grabbed the front of the victim’s collar and “threw her to the ground, resulting in her loss of consciousness.”
Emergency Medical Services transported the woman to a local hospital, but Sgt. Robert Blaschke confirmed that the victim later passed away. Police interviewed the second woman; however, the report indicates that her responses to inquiries about the incident were “not relevant and did not make sense.”
The report also noted that it appeared the woman “did not comprehend what had occurred or her actions.” Staff members informed the police that they had recently observed “a significant change” in the woman’s “mental capacity and behavior” and requested that she be taken to the emergency room for assessment.
No arrests have been made in connection with the assault, but Blaschke indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
