Nathan Alexander Orozco Obituary, Death; – A man, according to police, who was discharging his firearm from an open window and assaulting his girlfriend while driving along the highway, was fatally shot by a Grand Prairie police officer early Saturday morning.
On Sunday, Grand Prairie Police reported that a distressed woman called 911 shortly before 1 a.m., informing dispatchers that her boyfriend was intoxicated, armed, and assaulting her as they traveled on Interstate 30.
Authorities stated that the man exited Belt Line Road and halted in a gas station parking lot, prompting the woman to exit the vehicle. An officer approached the vehicle to ensure the woman’s safety and, aware that the man inside was reported to be armed, instructed him to display his hands.
The officer indicated that the man did not comply and began reaching toward the rear of the vehicle.
“Fearing for his own life and the safety of the female, the officer discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect,” police reported. “A subsequent search of the area where the suspect was reaching uncovered the loaded handgun.”
Officers administered first aid to the wounded man until he was transported to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 22-year-old Nathan Alexander Orozco.
Police noted that the woman, who sustained injuries during the assault, received treatment and was released by medical personnel.
Witnesses informed police that the man was observed firing the gun several times from the vehicle prior to the police’s arrival. It remains unclear whether the man was firing while driving on the highway or in the gas station parking lot.
No additional injuries were reported.
The identity of the officer involved has not been disclosed. The Officer-Involved Shooting Team at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is carrying out an independent investigation into the incident. Concurrently, the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative investigation.
