With profound love and immeasurable sorrow, the family of Kai James Grant Jesser, 19, of Green, Ohio, announces his passing on June 8, 2025. Kai’s life was heartbreakingly brief, yet filled with meaning, courage, and unforgettable presence. His passing has left family, friends, and the community deeply shaken, but also united in honoring the remarkable young man they were blessed to know.
Born on June 29, 2005, Kai was a proud 2023 graduate of Green High School, where he was remembered for his bright mind, sharp wit, and the ability to stand up for what he believed in. He carried those same qualities into his studies at The Ohio State University, where he pursued a degree in Political Science. His goal was to build a future where fairness and equality mattered, and his passion for advocacy, particularly around diversity, equity, and inclusion, shone through in both the classroom and his daily life.
Kai was never afraid to speak his truth. With humor, boldness, and conviction, he challenged the status quo, inspiring those around him to think differently, act kindly, and stand up for one another. His friends describe him as fiercely loyal, unapologetically authentic, and someone who could bring laughter to even the heaviest of moments.
At home, Kai was a protective and loving brother. He approached family life with the same energy that defined him everywhere else—mixing wisdom with playful mischief. His siblings fondly remember his competitive streak, whether it was in video games, anime debates, or late-night movie marathons. He brought intensity, passion, and joy to every interaction, leaving those closest to him with memories they will cherish forever.
Kai is survived by his devoted parents Regina Jesser, Andy Jesser, William Barnett, and Deszmon Grant; his beloved sisters Kamyl Grant and Brooke Barnett; his brothers Hayden Barnett and Daven Barnett; and an extended family who loved him dearly. He is also deeply mourned by his grandparents John Simms, Jen Monachino, Eileen and Bill Barnett, Joel and Delores Sumlin, and Mary Grant; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends and peers whose lives were touched by his spirit.
A memorial service to honor Kai’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305. Calling hours are from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a service beginning at 6:00 p.m. The family welcomes all who knew Kai and wish to celebrate his life to attend.
Kai’s death by suicide is a heartbreaking reminder that struggles with mental health are often unseen, even in those who appear strong, vibrant, and full of life. His family shares this truth with openness and vulnerability in the hope that it may encourage others to seek help and extend compassion to one another.
