COLUMBUS, Ga. — The city of Columbus is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ja’Kobe “Kobe” Smith, a 22-year-old firefighter with Columbus Fire & EMS, who tragically died by suicide on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Authorities confirmed he was found at his apartment shortly after 9 a.m., leaving his family, friends, and colleagues in shock.
Kobe was sworn in as a firefighter just this past June, fulfilling a lifelong dream to serve his community. Known for his warm smile, strong work ethic, and caring heart, he quickly became a valued member of the fire department. His fellow firefighters described him as a young man full of promise, always willing to help, and deeply committed to learning his craft.
Columbus Fire & EMS issued a statement saying, “Kobe was part of our family, and his loss has left a void that cannot be filled. Our prayers are with his loved ones during this devastating time.”
Family members say Kobe touched many lives as a son, nephew, teammate, and friend. His sudden passing is a painful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, especially for first responders who face daily stress and trauma in their line of duty.
As the community grieves, friends and loved ones are uniting to honor Kobe’s memory and to ensure his legacy of kindness and service lives on.
