LREDDING, Calif. — A family tragedy unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Redding, where a mother and son were fatally shot outside their residence on Abernathy Lane.
According to the Redding Police Department (RPD), officers were dispatched around 1:15 p.m. after reports of shots fired in the 10000 block of Abernathy Lane. During the response, a man called 911, telling dispatchers he had shot two people and remained armed inside the home.
Police immediately activated the SWAT team and deployed an Armored BearCat vehicle. When officers arrived, they located two adults suffering from severe injuries outside the residence. Despite lifesaving efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Tony Penta and his mother.
Authorities named the suspect as 31-year-old Jesse Penta, who eventually surrendered peacefully after speaking with a Crisis Intervention Response officer. He was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Shasta County Jail on two counts of murder.
Investigators noted that police had been called to the residence several times in recent weeks for family-related disputes. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
The incident prompted a temporary lockdown at Columbia Elementary School, which was lifted shortly after 2 p.m. Abernathy Lane remained closed for several hours as detectives processed the scene.
