LONG BEACH, Calif. — Authorities have identified the man killed in a scooter collision earlier this week as 45-year-old Daniel Murphy, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash occurred on Monday, September 1, at approximately 3:20 a.m. near the intersection of Seventh Street and Federation Drive, close to Recreation Park. Officers with the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded after receiving reports of a traffic accident involving a scooter and a vehicle.
When first responders arrived, they found Murphy unconscious in the roadway. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators said Murphy had been riding a scooter southbound across Seventh Street, outside of a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2016 Hyundai Accent driven by a 28-year-old man from Laguna Beach. Police confirmed the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Initial findings indicate that speed, impairment, and distracted driving were not factors in the crash.
The Long Beach Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact their Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
Officials note that Murphy’s death is a tragic reminder of the risks faced by scooter riders and other vulnerable road users, especially when crossing outside designated areas. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging both drivers and riders to exercise vigilance and share the road safely to help prevent future tragedies.
