The El Paso community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ruben Gutierrez, affectionately remembered as the “Piano Man” of the Highlanders, who has passed away. Ruben’s sudden departure has left a tremendous void not only in the lives of his family and friends but also in the music community that he dedicated his life to nurturing.
A gifted pianist, teacher, and mentor, Ruben’s influence stretched across generations, and his memory will live on through the countless students, colleagues, and audiences who experienced his music and spirit.
Born and raised in El Paso, Ruben attended Bel Air High School before pursuing his passion for music at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where he studied music. From a young age, it was clear that his gift was not just talent but a true calling. Music became the language through which he connected, taught, and inspired.
Ruben’s career was both broad and impactful. He served as a piano and music history instructor at YHS Early College Academy and an adjunct faculty member at El Paso Community College. He also lent his skills as an accompanist for organizations including the Young El Paso Singers, St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, and Studio Metropolis Danzas Españolas.
Over the years, Ruben’s music graced both sacred and secular spaces, from church services to jazz collectives, from classrooms to community events. He also served as a music minister at St. Pius X Catholic Church, a lecturer at UTEP, and an organist at Valley Congregational Church UCC, touching lives across El Paso with his artistry and faith.
Those who knew him speak not only of his technical brilliance but also of his generosity of spirit. Fellow musicians recall how Ruben would always invite others to join him on stage, encouraging collaboration and joy.
His colleagues admired his ability to sight-read, improvise, and bring music to life with soul and energy. Beyond performance, Ruben mentored countless students, sharing his knowledge and instilling confidence in aspiring musicians. Many credit him with shaping their paths in music and in life.
Friends describe Ruben as more than a musician—he was a loyal companion, a dedicated teacher, and a man with a sharp wit and a kind heart. He opened his home to friends for poker games, Super Bowl gatherings, and moments of laughter that became cherished memories. His generosity and warmth extended to all who crossed his path.
Tributes have poured in from across the community. One friend reflected, “Ruben, your legacy will carry on. The students you mentored will tell your stories, and the music you shared will never be forgotten.” Another shared, “He didn’t just play piano — he told stories, lifted spirits, and created magic.” Many remembered him as “Super Ruben,” a teacher who not only taught but inspired, and a performer who brought soul to every note.
Ruben is survived by his beloved wife, Monica Gutierrez, who stood by his side through his remarkable journey. To her, and to all of Ruben’s family, friends, colleagues, and students, the community extends its deepest condolences. His loss is immeasurable, but so too is the impact of his life’s work.
Today, El Paso says goodbye to a true legend. Ruben Gutierrez will forever be remembered as the Highlanders’ Piano Man, a musician whose passion and spirit will echo on in every song, every story, and every life he touched. Though the music world feels quieter without him, his melody continues in the hearts of all who loved him.
Rest in peace, Ruben. Your music lives on.
