Gavin Hinkey Obituary, Death; – A 21-year-old man has lost his life, and a 20-year-old woman remains hospitalized as of Sunday following a collision involving a vehicle from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, as reported by the California Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Cherry Valley Boulevard and Roberts Street, according to the CHP.
The patrol vehicle, a 2018 Ford Explorer, was operated by a 41-year-old deputy from the sheriff’s Cabazon station who was responding to a service call. The emergency lights and sirens of the vehicle were activated as the deputy traveled westbound on Cherry Valley Boulevard, nearing Roberts Street, the CHP stated.
Simultaneously, a 2018 Tesla Model 3, driven by 21-year-old Gavin Hinkey of Cherry Valley, was stopped southbound on Roberts at Cherry Valley and reportedly made a left turn as the patrol vehicle approached. The Tesla was struck broadside by the patrol vehicle, resulting in Hinkey being pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
The passenger, identified as Madeline Fox of Cherry Valley, was transported to a hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
The deputy, who reportedly was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident, sustained minor injuries. His identity has not been disclosed.
