Gary Kristensen Obituary: Mitchell, SD Community Forever Remembers His Life

With heavy hearts and immense gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Gary Kristensen, age 72, of Mitchell, SD, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 17th at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, 4:00–7:00 PM, also at Holy Family, with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 PM.

Gary was born on March 15, 1953, in Mitchell, SD, to Raymond and Betty Kristensen, and grew up in White Lake, where he graduated high school in 1971. He went on to earn his Electrician Degree from Mitchell Area Votech in 1973 and began his career wiring the Fine Arts Building at the University of South Dakota. Later that year, he joined Tri-County Electric in Plankinton, where he dedicated over 30 years before retiring.

In 1974, Gary married the love of his life, Janice (Schuman), and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering commitment to family. In Plankinton, Gary was an active part of the community — serving on the school board, coaching youth sports, and offering support wherever it was needed. Even in the face of tragedy, such as the school explosion that took two dear friends, Gary’s leadership and compassion remained steadfast.

After retirement, Gary embraced new chapters with enthusiasm — serving as Head Greenskeeper at Fish Lake Country Club and driving school buses, first in Plankinton and later for Foreman Company in Mitchell, where he proudly drove for DWU athletics, a role he loved deeply and where he made countless friendships.

Gary had a vibrant personality, a warm heart, and a hug that made everyone feel like family. Whether you knew him from the golf course, a sporting event, church, or simply from crossing paths in the community, you knew Gary’s smile and kindness were genuine. His faith was the foundation of his life — a proud member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Gary lived each day with purpose, humility, and joy.

He was passionate about life — a lover of baseball, golf, fishing, camping, and cards, but his greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren. He showed up for them, cheered loudly, coached with love, and supported them through everything life brought.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Janice; children: Angie (Amber), Ryan, Abby (Tyler) Waldner, and Jena (Josh) Lawson; grandchildren: Eva and Bailor Kristensen, Skylar, Avery and Zoey Lawson, and Ford Waldner; brother Ronnie (Sandy); and a large extended family of beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who became like family.

To say he will be missed doesn’t come close. Gary gave so much love and received just as much in return. He left this world surrounded by peace and the people who loved him most. We’re certain he’s already wiring something in heaven or driving a bus full of angels, smiling that big Gary smile.

Thank you, Dad, for everything. You believed in us, showed us how to love well, and reminded us that kindness goes a long way. We’ll miss you deeply — but we’ll carry you with us always.

Rest well, Gary. You ran a good race. Heaven is lucky to have you.
