After graduating from Hendrick Hudson High School, he pursued a calling of service that would shape the course of his life. His first step was joining the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman.

In that role, Shawn embodied selflessness, caring for his fellow servicemen and women with dedication and skill. His time in the Navy instilled in him the values of honor, duty, and compassion—qualities that he carried into every stage of his life thereafter.

Following his military service, Shawn pursued his passion for helping others by studying at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, Inc. There, he gained the training that would launch his lifelong career as a funeral director.

Over the years, Shawn held positions at respected institutions, including Hawthorne Funeral Home and eventually as a Licensed Funeral Director at Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home, where he also managed operations at O’Mara & Carpentieri Funeral Home. In every role, he treated families with dignity, respect, and genuine care, offering comfort during moments of unimaginable grief.

But Shawn’s service to his community extended far beyond his professional life. He was an active and dedicated member of the Verplanck Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks to become a Captain and Commissioner.

His fellow firefighters remember him as a natural leader—outgoing, reliable, and always the first to lend a hand. Whether responding to emergencies or mentoring younger members, Shawn was admired for his steady presence and unwavering dedication to protecting and serving his community.

The news of Shawn’s passing has sent waves of grief through Verplanck and beyond. Friends and colleagues have expressed their sorrow and gratitude for the many ways he touched their lives.

One friend shared, “Rest in Peace Shawn O’Mara—you were always there for your community and country, as a veteran, a firefighter, and as a funeral director who truly cared for the local people. Till we meet again, my friend.” Another described him as “an extraordinary angel—outgoing, caring, and an all-around amazing person. This hurts to even write. RIP Shawn O’Mara, we have it from here, brother.”
