Trey Reed Grenada MS Death – Delta State University Student Trey Reed Dies by Suicide

The Delta State University community is grappling with profound grief following the tragic discovery of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed of Grenada, Mississippi, who was found dead on campus early Monday morning. University officials confirmed the incident, which has deeply shaken students, faculty, and staff.

According to Delta State University Police Chief Mike Peeler, Reed’s body was discovered around 7 a.m. on September 15, 2025, hanging from a tree in the central part of campus, near the university’s pickleball courts. The shocking discovery prompted an immediate response from university police and local authorities.

Chief Peeler stated that preliminary findings indicate no foul play is suspected in Reed’s death. Reed’s body was taken into the care of the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be assisting alongside local agencies to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly reviewed.

In the wake of the tragedy, university officials made the decision to temporarily close the campus. Peeler emphasized that while classes and activities were paused, no lockdown was ordered and there is no threat to campus safety. “I just want to confirm, this is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It’s just unfortunate this loss that comes heavily to our campus,” Peeler said during a press briefing.

The sudden death of a young student has left the campus community stunned and heartbroken. Delta State University President addressed the media, expressing his condolences to Reed’s family, friends, and classmates. He noted that a decision regarding when classes will resume had not yet been made but assured that normal operations would continue “as soon as possible” once students and staff had the opportunity to process the tragedy.

Students and faculty have already begun gathering in small groups across campus to grieve, share memories, and support one another during this painful time. Counselors and mental health professionals have been made available to anyone in need of assistance, with the university encouraging students to take advantage of these resources.

For Reed’s family, the loss is immeasurable. Known by many as “Trey,” he was remembered as a bright young man with promise, aspirations, and strong ties to his community. His passing has not only devastated his family but has also left a lasting impact on friends and peers who admired his character and spirit.

As the investigation continues, officials remain focused on ensuring transparency and supporting the university community. The tragedy also highlights the importance of mental health awareness and outreach, particularly among college students who often face immense academic and personal pressures.

Delta State University has promised to hold a memorial service in Reed’s honor, offering the campus community an opportunity to gather collectively, honor his life, and find strength together.

Though his life ended far too soon, Demartravion “Trey” Reed’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, classmates, and all who knew him.
