The Discovery Bay community, along with family and friends across California, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Douglas “Doug” Clifton, 69, and his beloved partner, Katherine Velez Katz, 70, who tragically passed away on Monday following a motorcycle accident in Millard County, Utah.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the couple was traveling together on their motorcycle along State Route 50 when a box truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck them head-on. Both Doug, who was driving, and Katherine, who was riding as a passenger, were killed instantly.

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and officials reported that speed and drowsy driving were suspected factors in the crash. The highway remained partially closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene.

For their family and friends, the suddenness of this tragedy is nearly impossible to process. Doug and Katherine were a couple deeply connected not only to each other but also to their community. They shared a love of life, adventure, and companionship that will be forever remembered.

Doug Clifton, originally from San Francisco, made his home in Discovery Bay. He attended Skyline High School in Oakland and went on to build a meaningful career with the Alameda Fire Department.
