Emil LaSida Cleveland OH Obituary – Case Western Reserve University Remembers Beloved 21-Year-Old Swimmer

The Case Western Reserve University community, along with family and friends across the globe, is mourning the sudden passing of Emil LaSida, a standout swimmer, student, and cherished friend.

Emil died on September 15, 2025, at the age of 21, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of athletic excellence, academic dedication, and personal kindness.

Emil made history at the 2025 NCAA National Championships when he became the first Case Western swimmer ever to break the 20-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking 19.98 seconds in a dramatic swim-off to secure a finals spot.

Head Coach Doug Milliken called it “one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen one of my athletes do,” remembering Emil’s beaming smile in that moment of triumph.

That accomplishment was just one of many. Emil held seven school records, including the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 backstroke, as well as all four major relays. He earned NCAA All-America Second Team honors, numerous UAA conference awards, and multiple Academic All-District recognitions.

Beyond his times and medals, he was celebrated for his leadership, serving on the team’s Leadership Council and consistently uplifting his teammates with encouragement, humor, and an unshakable work ethic.

Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Emil captained his high school swim team and earned Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention before joining CWRU in 2022. A computer engineering major, he built deep friendships across campus.

Teammates and classmates alike recall his wit, reliability, and generosity. “Emil made every moment lighter, funnier, and better just by being there,” close friend William Froass said. Others remembered him as the quiet, dependable problem-solver who always had what you needed—and always made time to help.

Outside the pool, Emil enjoyed hiking, movie nights, board games, and simply sharing laughter with friends. His warmth and hospitality made him a natural host, and his contagious smile left lasting impressions on all who knew him. “He did everything with grace and out of love, always considering the needs of others,” teammate Claire Kozma reflected.

Emil is survived by his parents, Lolo and Maya; his brother, Lutfi; and an extended family reaching from Seattle to Arlington, and as far as Indonesia and Belgium. To them, and to his CWRU swim family, his loss is immeasurable.

Friends, teammates, and coaches agree that Emil was not only one of the most talented swimmers in program history but also one of its most respected leaders and kindest souls. His life, though far too short, was marked by love, dedication, and an enduring spirit that will continue to inspire.

The LaSida family will hold a private service. Case Western Reserve University has encouraged students, staff, and faculty seeking support to contact campus counseling services during this difficult time.

Emil LaSida will forever be remembered as a record-breaking athlete, a devoted friend, and a young man whose kindness and drive touched all who knew him.
