The Oakland University community and the city of Detroit are mourning the loss of Glenn McIntosh, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer at Oakland University, who passed away recently.

Known affectionately by many as “Dean Mac,” Glenn’s passing leaves an immense void in the lives of students, colleagues, friends, and family who were touched by his wisdom, kindness, and steadfast commitment to education and equity.

Glenn’s career in higher education spanned decades, during which he dedicated himself to creating opportunities and uplifting students. He began his journey at Detroit Western High School, later pursuing studies at Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Wayne State University, Bowling Green State University, and Oakland University.

His deep commitment to academic excellence was matched only by his passion for service and leadership. Before rising to senior leadership at Oakland University, Glenn worked at Bowling Green State University and served as Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Oakland.

Over the years, he became a trusted guide for countless students, always encouraging them to strive for excellence while reminding them they were never alone. Colleagues recall that his door was always open, and his words carried both compassion and conviction.

Tributes from across the community reflect the profound impact Glenn had. One former student and mentee remembered him as “a giant in everyone’s eyes who has graced OU’s campus and beyond,” adding that he embodied a blueprint of selflessness in his service to others.

Another close friend of over 30 years described Glenn as “one of the most exceptional creations that God put on this earth,” calling him a brother whose unwavering care for others made him an angel in life and now in heaven.

As Oakland University expressed in an official statement, “His leadership, kindness, and unwavering commitment to students shaped our campus in countless ways. Vice President McIntosh’s impact will be felt for generations, and his memory will remain a guiding light for the Oakland University community.”

Those who knew Glenn personally speak of his warmth, humor, and ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. He was deeply devoted to his students and colleagues, but above all, to his family. Glenn’s love for his wife, Lia, and his community was evident in every interaction.

He often signed off with the words: “I love you, and there’s nothing you can do about it.” It was more than a saying—it was the way he lived, offering unconditional care and encouragement to all.

Glenn McIntosh’s passing is a tremendous loss, but his legacy of leadership, compassion, and advocacy will continue to inspire future generations. His life was a testament to the power of education, service, and love.

The community will honor his memory not only in words but also in carrying forward his mission of equity, inclusion, and support for students. Rest in peace, Dean Mac—you will forever be remembered, loved, and missed.
