The music community is mourning the loss of Matthew “Matt” Steinke, a beloved road crew member, musician, and friend, who passed away unexpectedly in Santa Barbara, California.

Known for his talent, loyalty, and generosity of spirit, Matt’s passing has left his family, friends, and countless musicians heartbroken as they remember the life of a man who brought joy, dedication, and passion to every stage he touched.

Matt was best known in the rock world as a longtime guitar tech and road crew member for the popular band Sugarcult. He joined the crew in 2003, during a tour alongside his friends from Story of the Year, and quickly became an indispensable part of Sugarcult’s extended family.

For years, he traveled the globe with the band, supporting them on their U.S. and Japan tours with Green Day, as well as during Warped Tour 2004 and countless other adventures.

Friends and bandmates fondly recall Matt’s dedication to his craft and his ability to go above and beyond. He was more than just a crew member—he was a trusted brother, someone the band could always count on both on and off the stage.

Fans may remember him stepping into the spotlight himself; during live performances of “You’re the One,” Matt would often take over rhythm guitar duties so frontman Tim Pagnotta could engage the crowd. These moments captured not only his skill but also his deep love for the music and the people he worked alongside.
