A devastating tragedy has shaken Barstow, California, after 2-year-old Xavier Padilla Aguilera, a child with autism, was found dead Friday afternoon following a flash flood that swept away the car he was in with his father.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Thursday along Main Street, where sudden floodwaters overpowered their vehicle. Xavier’s father, 26-year-old Brandon Padilla Aguilera, managed to escape but was separated from his son in the rushing current.
“He’s devastated. We’re all devastated,” said Carolyn Tackett, Xavier’s grandmother.
The City of Barstow confirmed that Xavier’s body was recovered at 2:44 p.m. Friday in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River. “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time,” a city spokesperson said.
Brandon Aguilera was rescued by firefighters after being stranded on a small island formed by the floodwaters. He was hospitalized with water in his lungs, cuts, bruises, and a severe infection but has since been released.
Family members described the desperate effort to save Xavier. Tackett recalled through tears how her son tried to free the boy:
“He got my grandson out… My son went under. Now my grandson’s missing.”
Volunteers and first responders searched through the night and into Friday morning. Xavier’s aunt, Leanna, thanked the community for their support:
“If you live in the area, anything that can help us look through the dirt, the mud — anything to help us find him, we greatly appreciate it.”
Despite not always feeling connected to the city, Tackett praised those who came to help:
“I don’t even like Barstow, but today I love Barstow. Everybody that’s out here is from Barstow, trying to help me look for my grandson.”
Xavier, remembered as a sweet, nonverbal child with light brown curls, black pants, a shirt, and black-and-white Nike shoes, leaves behind a grieving family and community.
