Authorities in Rensselaer, New York, are investigating a fatal overnight stabbing that claimed the life of a local man and led to the arrest of a suspect from nearby Coeymans. The tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning, September 21, 2025, and has shaken the quiet community.
According to officials, Rensselaer Police officers were dispatched to John Street at approximately 12:04 a.m. following a report of a stabbing. When they arrived, officers discovered 32-year-old Brent Reed of Rensselaer suffering from serious injuries to his chest. The suspect had already fled the scene before authorities made contact.
Emergency personnel from multiple agencies, including the Rensselaer Fire Department, Mohawk Ambulance, Ambulnz, and an Albany Medical Center fly-car, provided immediate medical treatment. Despite their efforts, Reed’s injuries proved severe. He was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
By Sunday afternoon, investigators had identified a suspect in the case with assistance from the New York State Police. Authorities arrested 34-year-old Michael Bermudez-Gagnon of Coeymans in connection with the stabbing. He was charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree.
Bermudez-Gagnon was arraigned in Rensselaer City Court before Judge Linda Johnson and remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail. A follow-up court appearance is scheduled for later this week. At this time, officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances that led to the confrontation between Reed and Bermudez-Gagnon.
In a formal statement, the Rensselaer Police Department extended condolences to the victim’s family and thanked law enforcement partners for their assistance in bringing the suspect into custody quickly.
“The Rensselaer Police extend our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” the department said. “We would like to thank the New York State Police, the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office, and the police departments of North Greenbush, East Greenbush, and Watervliet for their assistance. This investigation is still in its early stages.”
Authorities are asking the public to come forward with any additional information related to the case. Those with knowledge of the incident are urged to contact the Rensselaer Police Department’s Detective Division at 518-462-7451.
The killing marks a grim reminder of the violence that can erupt in even small, close-knit communities. As the investigation continues, Reed’s family and friends are left grieving the loss of a young man whose life was cut tragically short. Prosecutors are expected to present additional evidence during upcoming court proceedings, while police continue to work to establish a clearer picture of the events that unfolded on John Street.
