Midvale Police Identify Victims in Suspected Murder-Suicide: Community Mourns Eilleen and Terry Lyon

Authorities have released new details surrounding a tragic incident that unfolded earlier this week in Midvale, Utah, which is now being investigated as a murder-suicide.

The Unified Police Department (UPD) confirmed that the victims have been identified as Eilleen Lyon, 65, and Terry Lyon, 63 — a married couple who were found dead inside their home.

The investigation began on September 23 at approximately 11:13 a.m., when police were called to perform a welfare check at a residence near 7500 South Jefferson Street.

According to officials, the call was initiated by one of the victims’ employers, who reported concern after an employee failed to show up for work and could not be reached by phone.

Upon arrival, officers noted that both vehicles belonging to the couple were parked at the home. The exterior appeared normal and “undisturbed,” with all doors and windows locked and secured.

Concerned about the well-being of the residents, police spoke with neighbors, friends, and co-workers, eventually obtaining a key to gain access to the home.

Inside, officers made the heartbreaking discovery: two individuals, later identified as Eilleen and Terry Lyon, were found deceased. Initial findings from investigators indicate that Eilleen died from a gunshot wound, while Terry’s death appears to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Based on the evidence collected at the scene, police believe the case to be a murder-suicide.

The Unified Police Department confirmed that no one else was inside the home, and investigators emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Importantly, authorities also stated that there was no known history of domestic violence at the residence, adding another layer of tragedy to the situation.

The case is being handled by UPD’s Violent Crimes Unit and Forensics Unit, who conducted a meticulous on-scene investigation. They are now working closely with the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner to confirm additional details, including the exact timeline and circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Detectives are also conducting interviews with relatives, friends, and co-workers to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy and to better understand any potential warning signs.

“This is a heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts are with the family, friends, and co-workers affected by this tragedy,” the Unified Police Department said in a public statement. “We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to provide answers and closure.”

The Midvale community has been left stunned by the sudden and tragic loss of the Lyons, described by neighbors as quiet, friendly, and devoted to one another. As investigators continue their work, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the silent struggles many people face behind closed doors.
