The Pottsville community is remembering the life and legacy of Kevin Keating, former Crimson Tide head football coach and longtime English teacher, who passed away Thursday at the age of 70. His name is woven into the history of Pottsville athletics and education, leaving behind an indelible mark on both the football field and the classroom.

Keating devoted more than three decades of his life to Pottsville Area High School, serving as both a teacher and a coach. His career as an educator began in 1980, and for the next 34 years, he guided students through literature and language while instilling life lessons that reached beyond textbooks.

His approachable nature and commitment to education made him a favorite among students who valued not only his knowledge but also his kindness and steady guidance.

It was on the football field, however, where Keating became a legend. Taking over as head coach in 1986, after several years as an assistant, Keating led the Crimson Tide for more than 20 seasons across two stints.

His career record of 166-110-4 stands as the best in Pottsville football history. For the countless players who suited up under his leadership, he was more than a coach—he was a mentor, role model, and motivator who pushed them to be their best.

The 2000s marked a particularly remarkable era for Pottsville football under Keating’s guidance. His teams secured three consecutive District XI Championships between 2004 and 2006, alongside three Eastern Football Conference titles.

Twice, in 2005 and 2006, Pottsville came within a step of a state championship, finishing as Class 3A runners-up. These achievements brought pride and excitement to the community and stand as some of the greatest moments in the program’s storied history.

After stepping down in 1999, Keating expanded his coaching career with Lafayette College before returning to Pottsville in 2003, reaffirming his commitment to his hometown team.

His final coaching role was with Shenandoah Valley, where he served as head coach from 2017 until 2019. His dedication to the game remained steadfast, even as he faced health challenges later in life.

In 2018, his accomplishments were recognized when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, an honor befitting his impact on high school athletics in the state.

Yet, for those who knew him, Keating’s legacy extends beyond records and championships. Students remember his encouragement in the classroom, and former players reflect on his lessons of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. “He was a great man and a great coach,” the Pottsville Area Athletic Department said in tribute.

Kevin Keating’s story is that of a man who lived for his community, his students, and the game he loved. As Pottsville grieves his loss, his memory will endure through the lives he shaped, the players he guided, and the traditions he helped build. His influence will remain a cornerstone of Pottsville Area football for generations to come.
