The family of Dorothea Cathell has officially identified the elderly woman killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Overbrook neighborhood of Philadelphia on Friday, September 26, 2025. Cathell was crossing the street near the intersection of 54th Street and Lancaster Avenue after purchasing Halloween items from a local supermarket, according to her relatives.
The family confirmed she was struck by a Black Infiniti, possibly from Delaware, while walking back from the store with a shopping cart. Semaj Suggs, who is Cathell’s grandson, described her as a well-liked community member who always maintained a positive attitude.
A local resident named Jim Burruss witnessed the incident around 5 p.m. He stated he heard a loud noise resembling a collision before discovering Cathell lying on the pavement. An unidentified individual reportedly provided emergency assistance until medical professionals arrived.
Law enforcement officials reported that the driver involved in the incident reversed their vehicle and drove southbound on Lancaster Avenue after the collision, eventually stopping to drop off a female passenger at a nearby pizza establishment. Police have described the involved vehicle as sustaining damage to its front section.
Cathell was transported to a medical facility where she unfortunately passed away. A small memorial has been established near the location of the accident. Suggs expressed his grief while trying to maintain a positive outlook, honoring his grandmother’s wish for him to remain happy.
Authorities are actively seeking information about the suspects and the black Infiniti. Any witnesses or leads are strongly encouraged to be shared with the Philadelphia Police Department.
