Russell M. He was 101 years old, making him the oldest president in the church’s history.

Before his full-time service in church leadership, Nelson gained international recognition as a pioneering heart surgeon. His medical expertise and contributions to the field saved countless lives and earned him respect from colleagues worldwide.

In April 1984, Nelson was called to serve as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, one of the church’s highest governing bodies. For more than three decades, he traveled extensively, teaching and ministering to members across the globe. On January 14, 2018, following the passing of President Thomas S. Monson, Russell M. Nelson became the 17th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His presidency was defined by both historic and transformative changes.

One of his earliest and most notable initiatives was his emphasis on using the full name of the church, urging members and the public to avoid the shorthand “Mormon” in reference to the faith. With his passing, leadership succession within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints follows established protocol. The next president is expected to be President Dallin H. Oaks, who currently serves as the First Counselor in the First Presidency and is the longest-serving apostle after Nelson.
