The Arapahoe County Coroner’s office has confirmed the identity of the man killed by Sheridan law enforcement. This individual, identified as Landis Scott Albers, was 32 years old at the time of his death. The official cause of death classification from the coroner’s office is homicide. It is important to note that this term simply indicates the death was caused by another person’s actions and does not constitute a determination of guilt.

Albers had a documented history of legal issues spanning recent years. While many of these matters were minor or related to traffic violations, he received a felony conviction this year for an attempt to assault someone using a deadly weapon with the intent to cause bodily harm. Furthermore, a protective order was issued against him by a Littleton couple in their seventh decade. These individuals stated that they had previously assisted Albers but expressed clear fear of him, specifically citing his bipolar condition as a concern.

Sheridan city officials released a statement detailing the events of the evening. According to the report, police were sent to a location near Clay Street and North Drive, situated just northwest of the Broken Tee Golf Course. Several citizens had contacted emergency services to report seeing a man brandishing a large knife while walking along the bike path. Two of the callers reported that the man had threatened them with the weapon.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers located Albers. They immediately ordered him to surrender the knife on multiple occasions, but he refused to comply and continued to approach the police officers. Despite escalating the situation, the officers maintained their distance. They attempted to incapacitate Albers using non-lethal methods, but these failed to deter him. Ultimately, the officers were forced to fire their weapons. Medical personnel arrived shortly thereafter and provided care until emergency services took over. Albers was transported to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is now examining the circumstances surrounding this incident. As is standard procedure for any law enforcement shooting, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
