The Milwaukee Chamber Theatre joins the greater Wisconsin arts community in both celebrating the exuberant life and mourning the sudden passing of Jack Forbes Wilson, a beloved musician, actor, educator, and artist whose influence reached across decades.
Jack passed away peacefully in hospice care at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Monday, September 29, only one week after receiving a surprising diagnosis of end-stage pancreatic cancer.
Jack’s passing leaves an immense void in the worlds of music, theater, and education. For more than five decades, he shared his talents, his wisdom, and his joy with audiences, students, and friends across Madison, Milwaukee, and beyond.
Known for his infectious spirit and boundless creativity, Jack had an extraordinary gift for making others believe in themselves. It has often been said that “Jack taught half of Milwaukee how to play the piano.” Yet, his lessons extended far beyond music.
His work as a teacher, mentor, and director resonated deeply because he did not simply teach craft—he instilled confidence, empathy, and resilience. Whether in the living room of his home, in school classrooms, on theater stages, or through his dedicated role as a church musical director, Jack imparted lessons of self-belief and creative expression that changed countless lives.
Students and friends alike have shared stories of how Jack’s encouragement helped shape their futures. One tribute captures what many have echoed: “Jack taught me to believe in myself before I knew that I could, and that part of myself in which he taught me to believe has proven foundational to the course of my life.” Such reflections speak to the profound and lasting legacy Jack leaves behind—a legacy built not just on music and performance, but on generosity, faith in others, and love for community.
Jack’s unique ability to blend humor, empathy, and artistry made him unforgettable both on and off stage. His performances brought joy, his teachings inspired confidence, and his friendships uplifted all who knew him. For many in Wisconsin’s artistic circles, his presence was more than just influential—it was essential.
His sister, Jane, shared that in his final days, every message sent to Jack was read aloud to him, and that he was comforted and cheered by the outpouring of love from friends, students, and admirers.
Those wishing to share remembrances and support for Jack’s family may send messages to tickets@milwaukeechambertheatre.org, which will be passed along. Physical cards for the family are also being collected in the lobby of the Studio Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center in Milwaukee through Sunday, October 5.
In accordance with Jack’s wishes, there will be no formal public service, with private arrangements made through Roper and Sons in Lincoln, Nebraska. However, local celebrations of Jack’s life and legacy are being planned, ensuring that the community he enriched will have the opportunity to gather, remember, and honor him.
Jack Forbes Wilson will be remembered not only for his music but also for his spirit: a creative force fueled by joy, empathy, and boundless generosity. His loss is deeply felt, but his legacy will continue to resonate in the lives of all those he taught, inspired, and loved.
