A Charlottesville man was among the three victims killed in a devastating mass shooting on Sept. 27 in Southport, North Carolina, that has shaken the small coastal town and surrounding communities.

According to a news release from the city of Southport, Soloman Banjo, 36, of Charlottesville, Virginia; Joy Rogers, 64, of Southport; and Michael Durbin, 56, of Galena, Ohio, were fatally shot in the incident.

Authorities say the suspect, Nigel Max Edge, 40, of Oak Island, has been arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Law enforcement officials announced during a press conference the following day that additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the American Fish Company, an outdoor bar overlooking the water. Police reported that Edge, who had been navigating a boat, stopped by the deck area before allegedly opening fire into the crowd. Chaos and panic ensued as patrons scrambled for cover. Several others were seriously injured in the incident, underscoring the scale of violence that unfolded in what is typically a peaceful and popular gathering place.
