Stallion Slick By Design Obituary News- legendary stallion, NFR qualifier, and one of the most influential sires in the barrel racing world passed away unexpectedly

The western performance horse industry is in mourning after the heartbreaking announcement of the passing of Slick By Design, a legendary stallion, NFR qualifier, and one of the most influential sires in the barrel racing world.

Highpoint Performance Horses confirmed on October 2, 2025, that the iconic black stallion was humanely euthanized due to complications from laminitis. He was 18 years old.

In an emotional statement, Jason Martin and Charlie Cole of Highpoint Performance Horses shared:
“It is with profound sadness and disbelief that we announce the passing of our beloved Slick By Design. Slick changed our lives and the lives of so many that he touched. Slick put us on the map in the barrel horse world and allowed us to travel places and meet amazing people that we would never have met. Thank you, Slick, for the ride of a lifetime, you will be terribly missed.”
They went on to thank the team of veterinarians and farriers who cared tirelessly for Slick, ensuring he lived like the champion he was. The stallion was laid to rest with honor, buried alongside AQHA Hall of Fame horse Acadamosby Award and Rods Last Ladybug.

Sired by Designer Red and out of Dreams Of Blue by Dream On Dancer, Slick By Design was destined for greatness. He quickly rose to prominence in futurities and AQHA shows, winning over $643,000 in his own career and securing the 2012 AQHA World Championship in Junior Barrel Racing.

His partnership with barrel racing veteran Michele McLeod elevated him into superstardom. Together, they qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) three times, thrilling fans with their electrifying runs. At the Thomas and Mack Center, they clocked a blistering 13.48 seconds—the fastest time ever recorded by a stallion on that stage.

Slick and McLeod also captured titles at some of the most prestigious rodeos in the U.S. and Canada, showcasing his unmatched speed, agility, and heart. His trademark style and powerful presence consistently carried him to the top of the leaderboard, solidifying his place among the greats of the sport.

Beyond his own achievements, Slick By Design’s greatest legacy lies in his impact as a sire. With career progeny earnings surpassing $11 million, he became one of the most sought-after and influential stallions in the barrel racing industry.

His offspring have excelled on every stage—from futurities to the professional rodeo circuit—proving that his talent, drive, and athleticism were passed down to the next generation.

Among his top earners is Slicks Lil Amigo, who boasts career winnings of over $428,000. More recently, Fiesta By Design, campaigned by Ashley Schafer, took the 2024 futurity season by storm, racking up nearly $350,000 and dominating major events such as the Pink Buckle.

Slick By Design was more than just a champion—he was a symbol of excellence, resilience, and possibility within the sport of barrel racing. His loss leaves an irreplaceable void, but his influence will continue to shape the industry for decades to come.

Our deepest condolences go out to Highpoint Performance Horses, Jason Martin, Charlie Cole, Michele McLeod, and all who loved Slick. Though gone, Slick By Design’s name, bloodlines, and legacy will forever shine as one of the brightest in barrel racing history.
