South Western Railway – Surbiton, London – Friday, October 3: Train services through Surbiton were brought to a halt on Friday afternoon after a person died on the tracks at Surbiton railway station.
British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that officers were called to the station at around 3.35pm following reports of a casualty on the railway line. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and crews from the London Fire Brigade also attended the scene. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the station.
A BTP spokesperson said:
“Officers were called at around 3.35pm today (3 October) to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Surbiton railway station. Officers responded with paramedics; however, sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The incident caused significant disruption to rail services. South Western Railway (SWR) confirmed that all lines between Woking and Wimbledon were blocked, with no trains running from Surbiton station for several hours. Passengers were advised that tickets would be accepted on Transport for London (TfL) bus services covering routes between London Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, Surbiton, Chessington South, Hampton Court, Epsom, Leatherhead, and Dorking.
Large crowds of commuters and passengers were seen waiting outside the station as emergency services remained on site.
SWR has warned that delays and cancellations are expected throughout the evening, with disruption likely to continue until the end of the day.
