Zemfira Mukhtarov, 12, from Brooklyn, and Ebba Morina, 13, from Manhattan, were found deceased on top of a moving train at the Marcy Avenue–Broadway station in Williamsburg at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Saturday.
Authorities reported that they were pronounced dead at the scene. The families and police have confirmed the identities of the two girls.
The incident on October 4 marks the fifth subway surfing fatality in 2025, nearing the six deaths recorded in 2024 and matching the total from 2023.
“As your mayor, and as a father, I’m heartbroken by the tragic loss of two young girls who died subway surfing in Brooklyn. My thoughts are with their families,” Mayor Eric Adams stated in a social media post.
In a statement, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow, who has been spearheading a campaign against this perilous trend, urged New Yorkers to engage in conversations with young people about the risks associated with riding outside train cars, emphasizing that subway surfing is not a safe activity.
His comments come in the wake of a new MTA advertising campaign launched in July, titled “Ride Inside, Stay Alive,” which aims to reduce subway surfing fatalities throughout the city.
Police have indicated that an investigation into the incident from October 4 is still ongoing.
