Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of an 80-year-old Port Allen woman Monday afternoon in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Authorities identified the victim as Janet Tchorlian, who, according to preliminary findings, was fatally injured after her vehicle was struck while crossing an intersection.
The crash occurred when Tchorlian reportedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the roadway, investigators said. As she proceeded through the intersection, another vehicle traveling along the cross street collided with the driver’s side of her car, causing significant damage.
Emergency crews responded promptly to the scene and transported Tchorlian to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site by first responders.
State Police say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine the exact cause of the crash. Factors such as speed, visibility, and potential impairment are being examined, though officials have not yet confirmed whether any of these contributed to the incident.
Troopers used the tragic crash as a reminder of the importance of driving attentively and obeying all traffic control devices, especially at intersections where visibility or reaction time can make the difference between life and death.
“Every intersection requires full attention,” a Louisiana State Police spokesperson said. “Taking a few extra seconds to stop, look, and listen can prevent tragedies like this one.”
Authorities continue to gather evidence and witness statements. Additional information will be released as the investigation develops.
Tchorlian’s death marks yet another heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of intersection-related crashes, which remain one of the leading causes of fatal collisions across Louisiana.
