Nate Baker Obituary, Death; – A man who was arrested following a crash that resulted in the death of a University of South Carolina student earlier this year is currently serving a prison sentence.
Public court documents indicate that Rosali Fernandez-Cruz entered a guilty plea to a charge of hit and run resulting in death on August 11. He received a one-year prison sentence, with credit for 131 days already served. According to records from the South Carolina Department of Corrections, he is set to be released in March 2026.

The charge was associated with a crash that occurred on April 2, during which Fernandez-Cruz struck 21-year-old Nate Baker while operating a truck at the intersection of Blossom and Assembly streets.
Baker, who was riding a motorcycle, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital. Originally hailing from Virginia, Baker was a junior majoring in business at USC at the time of his passing.
In contrast, Fernandez-Cruz was later identified by authorities as an undocumented migrant from El Salvador, having entered the United States as a minor in 2016. At the time of his arrest, he was also wanted by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for failing to appear in court in 2018.
Records from the South Carolina Department of Corrections reveal that Fernandez-Cruz was admitted to the Kirkland Correctional Institution on August 14. Additionally, court records indicate that three other charges related to the crash that resulted in Baker’s death were dismissed.
