We are deeply saddened to share the passing of John Sexsmith, a longtime Edmonton sportscaster and journalist, who died after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer. John was a trusted voice in Alberta sports for over two decades, and his impact on the city of Edmonton and beyond will not be forgotten.
John’s journey in broadcasting began in the early 1980s as a student in NAIT’s Radio and Television Arts program. From there, he carved out a remarkable career, becoming a fixture at Global Edmonton, where he worked for 26 years. Whether reporting from the sidelines or anchoring in the studio, John brought a unique blend of heart, humor, and deep respect for the stories he told. He had an unmatched ability to connect with viewers — not just as a reporter, but as a genuine person who cared deeply about his community.
Despite his cancer diagnosis, John never let illness define him. He lived fully, worked tirelessly, and continued doing what he loved — telling stories, coaching young athletes, and making people smile. He became a vocal advocate for cancer awareness, lending his voice and time to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, turning his personal battle into a mission of hope for others.
Known for his quick wit, dad jokes, and ever-present smile, John was more than a journalist — he was a mentor, a friend, and a steady presence in the lives of many. He devoted himself to coaching minor hockey and made a lasting difference in the lives of countless kids, teaching them not only how to play, but how to lead, work hard, and believe in themselves.
John is survived by his loving wife, Joanne, and their son, Joel, whom he loved more than anything. He also leaves behind colleagues, teammates, friends, and viewers who will miss him dearly.
To Joanne, Joel, and the entire Sexsmith family — our hearts are with you. John’s courage, humor, and kindness touched so many. He lived with purpose, and his legacy will carry on in every life he influenced.
