I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kayla Blackwell. Though words feel insufficient at a time like this, I hope this tribute brings comfort and honours the beautiful light she brought into our lives.

Kayla was a spark of kindness, a cherished daughter, sister, friend and teammate whose presence touched so many. From the moment she graced the rink with her smile and energy, we all felt the warmth of her spirit. Her courage in the face of such an overwhelming struggle — having undergone major surgery and battled an aggressive diagnosis with unwavering hope — spoke volumes about the person she was.
In the many memories we have of Kayla — cheering her on, seeing her joy when the team triumphed, witnessing her fierce loyalty and devotion to her family and friends — she showed us what it means to live with boldness and love. The image of her, medal in hand, standing with her teammates, surrounded by those who cared deeply for her, will always stay with us.
To her loving family — her father Bill, her mother Yurika, her younger sister Tasha — and to all who knew her: you have my heartfelt condolences. Grief may feel endless, but so too does love. And Kayla leaves behind a legacy of laughter, compassion, and an indomitable spirit that will continue to inspire us. May you find comfort in the countless lives she touched, and in the memories you built together.
Let us honour Kayla by living with the same generosity of heart she exemplified — by reaching out to each other, supporting one another, and carrying forward her sense of community. Let our tears remind us of how deeply she mattered; let our smiles remember the joy she brought; and let our actions reflect the love she showed.
Kayla, you will be missed more than words can express. But your life — though far too brief — was filled with purpose, connection and strength. May you rest in peace, free from pain and surrounded by light. And may we, who carry you in our hearts, strive each day to honour your memory in the way we live.
