HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. — Heartbreak fills the Hopkinsville community after an early morning fire claimed the life of an 83-year-old man and destroyed his longtime home. The tragic blaze broke out around 1:25 a.m. Wednesday at the corner of Striped Bridge Road and Lafayette Road, according to the Square Deal Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, the two-story log home was already fully engulfed in flames, with the second floor collapsing as crews battled the fire. Despite their rapid response, the flames spread quickly through the structure, making it impossible to enter safely during the height of the blaze.

Firefighters from Square Deal, with assistance from the Herndon and Lafayette Fire Departments, worked for hours to bring the fire under control. Once the flames were extinguished and the structure was safe to enter, responders made a tragic discovery—the body of the homeowner, 83-year-old Stephen Finchum, was found inside the remains of the home.

Officials confirmed that Finchum was the sole occupant at the time of the fire. Sadly, his home was completely destroyed, leaving nothing but charred debris behind. Investigators remained on scene throughout the morning, carefully sifting through the wreckage to determine how the fire started. The cause remains under investigation, though officials have not indicated any signs of foul play at this time.
