A tragic motor vehicle collision in the Town of Southeast has deeply affected the Brewster and wider Putnam County community following a serious early-morning crash involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck. Authorities have identified the driver of the car as Jaclyn L. Hamill, a 43-year-old educator whose life was abruptly cut short in the incident.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 7:11 a.m. on December 16, 2025, near the intersection of Deans Corner Road and Turk Hill Road. Investigators said the collision involved a 2016 Honda Civic sedan and a commercial moving truck traveling in opposite directions. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Hamill was declared dead at the scene. The two occupants of the moving truck were not injured.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Deans Corner Road as it approached Turk Hill Road. While navigating a curve, the vehicle crossed over the double yellow centerline into the northbound lane, where it collided with the oncoming truck. Officials emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that the exact factors contributing to the crash have not yet been fully determined.
Deans Corner Road was closed for several hours following the incident to allow emergency crews and investigators to safely manage the scene. The New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit assisted local authorities in examining vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and other physical evidence to help clarify how the crash unfolded. Traffic was later reopened once the scene was cleared.
Hamill’s loss has been felt strongly by those who knew her, particularly within the education community, where she was known as a dedicated teacher who cared deeply about her students. Friends and colleagues have described her as compassionate, hardworking, and committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young people. News of the crash has prompted an outpouring of support for her family and loved ones.
In a statement, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office expressed heartfelt condolences to Hamill’s family during this painful time. Officials also reminded drivers to remain cautious, especially on winding rural roads during morning hours when visibility, weather conditions, or fatigue can increase risk.
As the investigation continues, authorities have said that additional information will be released if and when it becomes available. Community members are encouraged to keep Hamill’s loved ones in their thoughts while reflecting on the importance of roadway safety and awareness.
