Patrick Sathyanathan, 60, was fatally shot by a police officer early Friday morning after reportedly firing at officers with a high-velocity air rifle. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Sathyanathan on Monday and ruled his death a homicide due to a gunshot wound to the head.
The incident occurred near the 15800 block of Northup Way. According to Washington State Patrol Sgt. Jermaine Walker, officers recovered an air rifle that discharged metal projectiles at the scene.
Police were initially dispatched around 8:15 p.m. Thursday to an apartment complex following reports that a man was charging at people with a sword. Upon arrival, officers say Sathyanathan barricaded himself inside his apartment and began firing at law enforcement with what appeared to be an airsoft-style rifle.
No officers were injured during the confrontation.
The Washington State Patrol’s Independent Force Investigation Team is handling the ongoing investigation. Both Sgt. Walker and Bellevue Police spokesperson Drew Anderson have declined to provide further details on the circumstances of the call or the officers involved.
The police confirmed the fatal shooting nearly 18 hours after the incident occurred.
