A tragic shooting unfolded Monday afternoon in North Austin, leaving three people dead and shaking the community.
According to authorities, a 32-year-old white male gunman with a known history of mental health issues opened fire in the parking lot of a Target store. After killing three individuals, the suspect fled the scene, carjacking two vehicles in the process.
Officers responding to the scene found two victims pronounced dead at the site, while a third victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital. Another individual suffered unrelated injuries and received treatment at the scene.
The suspect initially fled in a stolen vehicle but crashed it shortly afterward. He then hijacked a second vehicle from a nearby Volkswagen dealership. Police located the suspect about 18 miles south of the shooting site. After a brief standoff, officers subdued him with a Taser and took him into custody.
Charges are pending, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities continue working to gather more information on this devastating incident.
