Mason R. Anderson Obituary, Death; LaPorte County deputies investigating deadly crash

Mason R. Anderson Obituary, Death – A tragic accident in LaPorte County on Friday claimed the life of a bicyclist after a collision with a commercial truck. According to authorities, the crash occurred just before noon, at around 11:59 a.m., near the intersection of State Road 39 and County Road 900 North.

LaPorte County officers reported that a group of cyclists had been riding southbound along the shoulder of State Road 39 as they approached the intersection. At the same time, a tractor-trailer combination, operated by a 64-year-old man from Demotte, was also traveling south on the same roadway. Investigators determined that the driver of the tractor-trailer attempted to pass the group of cyclists by moving into the left lane, as the area was marked as a passing zone.

During this maneuver, one of the riders, identified as 29-year-old Mason R. Anderson of Chicago, began making a left turn onto County Road 900 North. As Anderson crossed into the roadway, the driver of the tractor-trailer steered further left in an attempt to avoid hitting him. Despite the driver’s efforts, Anderson collided with the side of the trailer.

The impact proved fatal. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, but Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has left family and friends mourning the sudden loss of a young man who was simply out on a bike ride. Authorities confirmed that toxicology tests are being conducted, but results are not yet available.

At this stage, officials have not announced whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash. Investigators are reviewing all factors that may have contributed, including the movements of both the bicyclist and the truck driver. Police stressed that the investigation remains active, and more details will be released once additional information becomes available.

This incident highlights the dangers that cyclists and motorists can face when sharing the road. Even with proper lanes and passing zones, unexpected movements—such as a turn into traffic—can quickly lead to catastrophic outcomes. Authorities have not specified whether Anderson signaled his turn or if the truck driver had sufficient time to react before the collision occurred.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office has urged drivers and cyclists alike to remain cautious on roadways, especially at intersections and during passing maneuvers. They stressed that awareness and communication between cyclists and motorists are key to preventing tragedies of this kind.

The death of Mason Anderson is a sobering reminder of how vulnerable bicyclists are in traffic compared to larger vehicles, especially commercial trucks. His passing marks yet another case in which a recreational ride ended in devastation.

As investigators continue their work, community members await updates on the findings, including whether the toxicology results or other evidence might influence the outcome of the case. For now, officials have confirmed only that no additional information is available.
