Authorities Respond to Leander ISD School Bus Crash Injuring Multiple Near Big Sandy Creek

Authorities are investigating a serious school bus crash in northwestern Travis County that left several children injured Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. near the intersection of Nameless Road and Palomino Ranch Drive, close to Big Sandy Creek.

The bus, belonging to the Leander Independent School District, was carrying 42 children and one adult chaperone at the time of the incident. Emergency responders from Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed that multiple injuries were reported, though the extent of those injuries has not yet been released.

Several children were evaluated at the scene, and some were transported to local hospitals for further treatment. Kristin Dark, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is taking the lead on the investigation.

DPS troopers were joined by deputies, EMS crews, and local fire departments who responded swiftly to the scene. “Our priority right now is ensuring all the children are safe, accounted for, and receiving any medical care they need,” Dark said.

The location of the crash adds another layer of concern for local residents. Just last month, the Big Sandy Creek area was devastated by a deadly flash flood that damaged multiple roadways, including portions of Nameless Road.

Recovery efforts have been ongoing, but some routes in the area remain in less-than-optimal condition. Authorities have not confirmed whether the road’s condition played a role in Wednesday’s accident.

As parents rushed to the crash site after receiving alerts from the school district, law enforcement quickly set up a secure perimeter to allow emergency crews to work. Children who were not seriously injured were transferred to another bus and taken to a designated reunification point where they could meet their families.

Leander ISD issued a statement expressing deep concern for the students and staff involved:

“Our hearts are with the families impacted by this afternoon’s bus accident. We are grateful for the rapid response from local emergency services and are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. Counselors will be available at the affected schools to support students and staff.”

Austin-Travis County EMS reported that their crews coordinated closely with STAR Flight and area hospitals in case air transport became necessary for more severe injuries. As of Wednesday evening, no fatalities had been reported.

The DPS is expected to examine several factors in determining the cause of the crash, including mechanical integrity of the bus, driver condition, road conditions, and possible weather-related influences. Investigators will also review any available traffic camera footage and interview witnesses, including the driver and students.

This accident marks another traffic safety concern for the region, which has faced ongoing infrastructure challenges due to recent severe weather. Residents in the Big Sandy Creek area have repeatedly urged county officials to prioritize repairs and implement additional safety measures along Nameless Road.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact DPS investigators. This remains a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
