Joy Rogers Obituary, Death; – A family from Southport, North Carolina, has confirmed the identity of one victim involved in the mass shooting that occurred over the weekend.

As reported by ABC affiliate WWAY, Lennie Rogers stated that his wife, Joy Rogers, aged 64, was killed in the shooting on Saturday night. The couple relocated to the coast approximately a year ago from California. Both were present at the American Fish Company when the gunfire erupted.

In a statement acquired by WWAY, the Rogers family expressed:

“Joy was a devoted wife to her husband and a loving mother of three. Born and raised in California, she and her family moved to Southport just a year ago to enjoy their retirement. In that brief period, she impacted countless lives within her community. Joy had a profound love for Jesus, which translated into a deep love for others.

She truly embodied her name her spirit radiated joy, light, and kindness wherever she went. Joy possessed a unique ability to make people feel acknowledged and welcomed. She was genuinely a vibrant part of both her family and the community, and her absence will be profoundly felt.” Two additional individuals lost their lives in the incident, while five others remain hospitalized.

The alleged shooter, 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge, is a decorated Marine veteran whose last duty station was at Camp Lejeune. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head while serving in Iraq and is reportedly experiencing PTSD.

The mass shooting in Southport took place merely 12 hours prior to another incident in which a Marine veteran, who also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, allegedly drove his truck through the front doors of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and opened fire on the congregation with an assault weapon, resulting in four fatalities and eight injuries, according to authorities. The suspected gunman in Michigan was killed during a confrontation with police.

During a press conference on Sunday, North Carolina officials alleged that Edge specifically targeted patrons of the American Fish Company on the Southport waterfront, who were enjoying live music on an outdoor deck when the suspect began firing an assault rifle from a boat.
