Authorities Expect Charges to Be Upgraded After Downtown Fargo Victim Dies

The man critically injured in a violent downtown assault earlier this month has died, and charges against the alleged attacker are expected to be upgraded to homicide.

Fargo police confirmed on Wednesday, August 13, that 55-year-old John Pilcher died from his injuries. Court documents indicate Pilcher was discovered on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Broadway just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, bleeding from a severe head wound.

Pilcher had suffered multiple facial fractures and was given a poor prognosis for meaningful recovery after being rushed to Sanford Hospital.

Hours before police announced Pilcher’s death, Tabias Walker was arraigned on aggravated assault charges in connection with the attack. Authorities say those charges will likely be upgraded.

According to court records, a 911 caller found Pilcher lying in a pool of blood outside the Fargo Theatre. She told investigators that Pilcher had said, “I just wanted help. They attacked me and whacked me.”

Surveillance video from a nearby business appeared to show a suspect in dark clothing, carrying a skateboard, assaulting Pilcher. After the attack, Pilcher was seen stumbling and leaning against a door outside the theater, where he was later found by the caller.

The investigation remains ongoing.
