Authorities have identified the two men who died in a car crash Monday night while turning onto a Chula Vista street. The victims were 76-year-old Juanito Muyco and 75-year-old Michael Baril, both lifelong residents of Chula Vista.
According to police, the men were returning from a church event when their vehicle collided with another car at the intersection of Apache Drive and Telegraph Canyon Road around 8 p.m. Their white Subaru Forester, traveling east on Telegraph Canyon Road, was making a left turn onto Apache Drive when it was struck by a westbound red Ford Mustang.
The impact caused the Subaru to overturn, trapping all four occupants. Emergency crews had to use specialized tools to extract the passengers. Baril, the driver, died at the scene, while Muyco, the front passenger, was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two women in their 60s, seated in the back of the Subaru, were also hospitalized.
The Mustang driver, a 41-year-old man, remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Both Muyco and Baril were long-time members of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, and the parish community mourned their loss at Tuesday morning mass. Police confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, and the Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Bureau continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
