The local sports community is mourning the loss of Gary Nicoll, a former Tamarack High School basketball player (2001–2003) and son of longtime area basketball official Gary Nicoll Sr. Gary tragically passed away following a devastating car accident in East Greenbush last Thursday.
Known for his talent on the court, his competitive spirit, and his kindness off of it, Gary leaves behind teammates, friends, and family who remember him for his laughter, leadership, and love of the game. The community sends heartfelt condolences to the Nicoll family during this heartbreaking time.
In other news, Sam Croce, a substitute on the undefeated 1969-70 Linton High basketball team, has also passed away. Croce’s role on that legendary squad remains part of local sports lore—may he rest in peace.
There are brighter notes, too. Keegan Croucher, a standout quarterback from Fonda-Fultonville, has committed to Ole Miss, choosing the Rebels over offers from Oregon, Penn State, and Georgia. The 6’4”, 205-pound four-star recruit was ranked No. 151 in ESPN’s Top 300 and continues to turn heads for his athleticism and poise.

Nico Savini, one of Ballston Spa’s finest athletes, is now a starting safety for Union College. The sophomore has already scored two interception-return touchdowns this season, proudly carrying on the football legacy of his father and grandfather—both Mont Pleasant standouts in their eras.
We also remember the greats who paved the way—Barry Kramer, Pat Riley, Paul Heiner, and Jack Scirocco—whose names still echo through local gyms and fields.
Together, these stories of triumph, tragedy, and legacy remind us how deeply sports connect generations and how each athlete, in life or memory, continues to inspire.
