A tragic accident in Howard County, Indiana, claimed the life of a construction worker on Monday afternoon, leaving the community in mourning. According to Indiana State Police (ISP), the fatal crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on State Road 22 near County Road 400 East.

The victim has been identified as Aaron M. Esparza, 31, of Logansport, Indiana, a hardworking construction worker who was performing his duties when the incident occurred.

Authorities report that a school bus operated by the Northwestern School Corporation was traveling on County Road 400 East, approaching the intersection at State Road 22. At the same time, Esparza was in the active construction zone, directing traffic to ensure the safety of motorists and workers.

Preliminary investigation revealed that as the bus began to cross State Road 22, a Dodge pickup truck traveling eastbound collided with the driver’s side of the school bus. The force of the impact caused the bus to veer into Esparza, striking him as he stood in the roadway.

Emergency responders from the Indiana State Police and Howard County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene, but sadly, Aaron Esparza succumbed to his injuries. The Howard County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his death at the scene.

The school bus driver sustained minor injuries and received treatment, while the eight students onboard the bus miraculously escaped unharmed. Despite the absence of additional physical injuries, the emotional toll on the students, staff, and witnesses has been significant.

In a heartfelt statement released by the Northwestern School Corporation, the district expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, stating:

“Northwestern School Corporation is deeply saddened to confirm that one of our school buses was involved in a tragic accident this afternoon involving a pedestrian. Emergency personnel and law enforcement responded immediately to the scene, and we have been informed that the pedestrian did not survive.
