WPD Identifies 14-Year-Old Killed in High-Speed Crash at Harry and Rock; Suspect on the Loose

The Wichita Police Department (WPD) is searching for 19-year-old Gauge Brasher, accused of being the driver in a high-speed crash that claimed the life of 14-year-old Jackson Nzabonimpa on Wednesday evening.

The fatal crash occurred near Harry and Rock Road around 6:30 p.m. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in the area witnessed the aftermath and saw two men fleeing from a crashed black BMW. Both were briefly detained following a short chase.

Investigators say the BMW, driven by Brasher, was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed when it struck a power pole and a utility box. The impact forced both objects into Jackson, who was nearby. The teenager died at the scene.

Police believe impairment and excessive speed were significant factors in the deadly collision. Brasher, suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, was hospitalized for treatment but later left the hospital. His 24-year-old passenger was released without charges.

WPD says it does not normally identify suspects before formal charges, but due to the severity of the incident, they believe Brasher poses an ongoing danger to the community. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for prosecution.

“This was not an accident. It was a series of reckless choices,” said WPD Chief Joe Sullivan. “When you mix extreme speed with suspected impairment, you turn a vehicle into a weapon. We will pursue full accountability for the death of this young man and his family.”

Anyone with information on Brasher’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 immediately. Tips can also be submitted to the Accident Follow-Up Unit at 316-350-3685 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

Jackson Nzabonimpa is being remembered by loved ones as a bright and promising young man whose life was cut tragically short by preventable actions. The community now rallies behind his family, demanding justice and accountability.
