North Aurora Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash at Lee County Intersection with Three Fatalities in Two Months

A suburban man has died in a motorcycle crash in rural Lee County, marking the third fatal accident at the same intersection in just two months.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 67-year-old Alan P. Klimas, of North Aurora, Ill. The crash occurred on Saturday, August 9, at the intersection of Illinois Route 251 and Chicago Road.

According to a Sheriff’s Office press release, Klimas was riding a 2022 Harley Davidson with a group around 7 p.m. when they realized too late they needed to turn left onto Chicago Road. The pavement was wet from a passing thunderstorm, causing Klimas to slide and lose control.

He sustained severe injuries and was transported to OSF St. Paul Medical Center in Mendota, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the intersection has become a troubling hotspot for serious accidents. On June 9, a collision there claimed the lives of 16-year-old Chasity J. Stavenhagen, of Earlville, and her passenger, 20-year-old Kevin Kain, of West Brooklyn. On July 3, another crash left a 42-year-old Sycamore man critically injured, requiring him to be airlifted to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that the string of deadly and severe incidents highlights ongoing safety concerns at the intersection.
