Breaking: One Dead Following Stabbing and Standoff at Ralphs in Goleta

A major police response is underway at the Ralphs grocery store on Hollister Avenue in Goleta after a violent incident left one person dead and forced a full evacuation of the store Monday evening.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a stabbing and possible shooting at the Ralphs located in the Magnolia Shopping Center.

When deputies arrived, they found one victim suffering from stab wounds inside the store’s manager’s office. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the suspect had barricaded himself inside a bathroom as law enforcement established a perimeter and worked to safely evacuate customers and employees. A Sheriff’s helicopter hovered overhead while tactical units and crisis negotiators responded.

Witnesses reported a fight breaking out outside the store shortly before the stabbing occurred. Several ambulances and fire trucks were seen arriving as deputies cleared the store to ensure no additional victims were inside.

It remains unclear how the suspect died or whether deputies discharged their weapons during the standoff. Sheriff’s officials have not yet released the names of the suspect or the victim.

A command post has been established at the scene, and Hollister Avenue remains partially closed as detectives continue their investigation.

Residents are urged to avoid the area while law enforcement secures the scene and gathers evidence.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
